The RockWallet Philosophy

These four principles guide every recommendation on this site.

Pay in Full.

Interest can quickly exceed the value of rewards. Use cards only for purchases you can repay by the due date.

Applications Have Tradeoffs

Hard inquiries, new accounts, utilization, payment history, and account age can all affect credit. Avoid unnecessary applications, especially before a major loan.

Compare Redemption Value

Cash, points, and miles are not interchangeable. Compare the value you can actually redeem, along with fees, caps, portal restrictions, and transfer-partner risk.

Treat Crypto as Volatile

Crypto card rewards can rise or fall after they are earned. Compare the reward rate at award, custody risk, required balances, spending caps, and membership costs before choosing a card.

Robinhood Gold vs. the Costco Card

Robinhood Gold Card

3 points per $1 on eligible purchases

✓ Brokerage-cash redemptions at 1¢ per point

✓ No category activation under the current base rewards rules

✗ Active $50/year annual Gold membership required

✗ New accounts opened on or after July 1, 2026 have a 3% foreign transaction fee

$24k eligible spend = $720 at 1¢/point, before membership cost

Costco Anywhere Visa

5% Costco gas; 4% other eligible gas and EV charging, on the first $7,000 combined each year, then 1%

• 3% eligible restaurants and travel; 2% Costco and Costco.com; 1% other purchases

• Rewards are issued as a certificate after the February statement and expire December 31

• Certificates under $300 are redeemed at a U.S. Costco warehouse; eligible certificates of $300 or more may be direct-deposited

• Category rates may outperform a flat card for some spending mixes

• Costco membership and current category caps/terms apply

Outcome depends on category mix

A flat 3-point rate can be simpler, while the Costco card may earn more in its bonus categories. Compare eligible spend, both memberships, redemption timing, caps, and foreign-use costs.

Chase Sapphire Reserve

• Chase lounge network, Priority Pass after enrollment, and Air Canada lounge access; current access rules apply

• Hyatt is among the current transfer partners; transfer ratios and availability can change

Compare fee after personally valued benefits

The better fit depends on which travel credits, transfer partners, lounges, and insurance benefits you will actually use. Compare current issuer terms before applying.

Coinbase Bitcoin Rewards vs. Amex Membership Rewards

Coinbase One Card (4% tier)

4% in Bitcoin requires at least $200,000 in eligible Coinbase assets

• The 4% rate applies to the first $10,000 of eligible purchases per month, then 2%

• Bitcoin's value can rise or fall after rewards are awarded

• An active paid Coinbase One membership is required; annual Basic currently costs $49.99

• USDC rewards are currently 3.50% APY, variable, and are not FDIC- or SIPC-insured

Tier, cap, custody, and membership apply

Amex Gold Card

• Earns Membership Rewards points rather than a fixed cash percentage

• Redemption value varies by method and transfer partner

• Bonus-category eligibility and annual spending caps apply

• Includes a higher annual fee and merchant-specific credits

• Points do not carry cryptocurrency price or exchange-custody risk

Compare categories and redemption plans

Coinbase provides Bitcoin rewards with balance, cap, membership, custody, and volatility tradeoffs. Amex points use category and redemption rules instead. Neither option is universally better; use your spend and intended redemption method.
